Marriage License

Getting a Marriage License

Obtaining a marriage license is not difficult, if you do a little research. Different states have varying rules regarding applications. These variables can include how long until it matures, how long it is valid, whether witnesses are needed, etc… I have I added some links to a website that will show you what the some local state requirements are. However, I would also contact the county municipal office nearest you. See what the hours/prices for that office are as these can vary from county to county.

Important Notes

Online submission of paperwork for your marriage license is available in many states. But, you will still have to appear in person with your identification in order complete paperwork and obtain your license. Identification is not usually more than a valid drivers license or other state-issued ID.

Be advised, your license may have a waiting period of up to 3 days before the license is considered legal. This means if you are getting married on a Saturday, the LATEST you can obtain your license would be the Wednesday prior. Please do not disregard this important piece of information. Your marriage license will have a date of issuance stamped on it. Because of that, if I sign and date it prior to it maturing your marriage will not be considered legal in the eyes of state officials. As an officiant, at the least I could lose my ability to perform weddings in that state as well. Please do not put yourself (and me) in that situation, allow plenty of time to obtain your license.

In an EXTREME circumstance, you may be able to get a judge to waive the waiting period (usually when related to military service), but it is not likely in other situations.
